Understanding The ADA Seal Of Acceptance

The American Dental Association was founded way back in 1859, and the association has grown to more than 161,000 members in all 50 states as of writing. Along the way, members of the ADA wanted to find a way to differentiate dental health products that stood out from the rest. This way, when a consumer was walking down the aisle looking for a dental product, they could easily spot a product that was recommended by dentists. This led to the formation of the American Dental Association’s Seal of Approval.

What Is The ADA Seal Of Acceptance?

The ADA Seal of Acceptance is currently attached to just over 300 oral health products that have been scientifically evaluated by independent experts to not only be safe, but be effective on a consumer’s teeth. Some of the products that carry the seal of approval include:

  • Toothpastes
  • Dental floss
  • Toothbrushes
  • Mouthwashes
  • Denture adherents
  • Chewing gum
  • Mouthguards
  • Whitening strips

In order to earn the seal of acceptance, these dental products can’t just meet the standards put forth by the Food and Drug Administration. These products often need to meet higher standards than what is required by law, and if a product can’t meet the high threshold, or if a newer version doesn’t quite meet the standard, the product won’t get the seal.

You can learn more about the seal of acceptance and the grading criteria for earning the seal of acceptance by clicking here, but the main thing you need to know is that if you see the seal of acceptance on the shelves, you know that product has been approved by the American Dental Association. These products are the same ones dentists are buying for their family, so you know they work!
