Dental Implants vs. Bridges – What’s the Difference?

In a recent article, we talked briefly about whether or not you need to replace a missing tooth. If you are looking to replace a missing tooth, you have two basic options – a dental implant, or a bridge. Each option has its benefits and drawbacks. In this article, we are going to discuss the similarities and differences between dental implants and bridges and when to consider each!

Dental Implants

A dental implant involves placing a titanium cylinder into the jawbone in place of the missing tooth, which creates an artificial root on which an artificial tooth is placed. There are many benefits to choosing dental implants. They look and feel more natural than bridges, and they support jaw health. Dental implants are long lasting.

Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is crated by inserting crowns on your natural teeth that are adjacent to the missing tooth. Then, these crowns are utilized to create a “bridge” between the gap that holds a replacement (artificial) tooth. The biggest difference here is that the replacement tooth is not affixed to the jaw. The dental bridge procedure is generally less intensive, quicker, and cheaper than the dental implant procedure. The downside is dental bridges often don’t last as long as dental implants.
