Healthy smiles come in a variety of shades, but many people would like their smiles whiter.
Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation available online and in magazines, that can lead people to believe that they can use products from their own home to achieve the goal of whiter teeth. Do It Yourself (DIY) whitening can harm your teeth.
Lemons, oranges, apple cider and baking soda are commonly seen as a DIY option, but the acid in the fruit and vinegar when use in prolonged contact with the tooth will wear the enamel off. This leads to tooth sensitivity and cavities.
Another misconception is the using active charcoal and baking soda-hydrogen peroxide will brighten a smile. Unfortunately, these products are too abrasive and will also wear away the enamel causing the dentin to become exposed and the teeth will look more yellow. Repairing the long term damage that DIY teeth whitening can cause can get very expensive.
There are other safer options. Please feel free to call our office with questions about teeth whitening. We are happy to provide a complimentary consultation.
